Ugaafrik Editors offers professional Ghana translation services for organisations that work in or with Ghana. From our base in Kampala, we translate and interpret English, Akan (Twi and Fante), Ewe, Ga, Dagbani, Dagaare and other Ghanaian languages. We work through a remote network of native-speaker linguists. As a result, we can support NGOs, UN agencies, businesses, researchers and families wherever they are.

Many of our clients start with English to Twi translation, then add Ewe, Ga or Dagbani for other regions. So if you already know what you need, you can request a quote today.

Ghana’s Languages and Why Ghana Translation Services Matter

First, English is Ghana’s official language. Government, courts, business and schools above the early grades use it. However, most Ghanaians speak a Ghanaian language at home, and many rural people use English very little.

Ghana has around 80 languages. Akan is the most widely spoken, especially in the south and centre. In addition, the state supports a set of Ghanaian languages for use in schools and public media. The Bureau of Ghanaian Languages promotes these languages and their writing.

For this reason, English alone often misses large parts of the public. Strong Ghana translation services therefore pair English with the right local languages for each region.

    Main languages for Ghana projects

    Language Main areas Notes
English Nationwide Official language and main written language
Akan (Asante Twi, Akuapem Twi, Fante) Ashanti, Eastern, Central, Bono and beyond Largest language group; widely used as a second language
Ewe Volta region Also spoken in Togo and Benin; several dialects
Ga and Dangme Greater Accra and nearby Ga is the traditional language of Accra
Dagbani (Dagbanli) Northern region, Tamale Main language of northern Ghana
Dagaare Upper West region Also spoken in Burkina Faso
Nzema, Gonja, Kasem Western, Savannah, Upper East Also among the state-supported languages
Ghanaian Pidgin and Hausa Cities, markets, northern towns Used as informal shared languages

    Who Needs Ghana Translation Services?

Ghana is a stable democracy and a regional base for many organisations. As a result, our clients range widely. For example, a donor in London may need Twi and Ewe versions of a health campaign. Meanwhile, a firm in Kenya may need Twi radio adverts for a launch in Kumasi.

    Health and social programmes

Health partners in Ghana work on malaria, immunisation, maternal health, nutrition and HIV. Therefore, they need leaflets, consent forms and survey tools in Twi, Ewe, Ga and Dagbani. Our medical translation team handles this work with care.

    Cocoa, mining and agriculture

Ghana is a leading cocoa grower and a major gold producer. In addition, farming supports many rural families. Companies and projects in these sectors need safety rules, community notices and training packs in local languages. For instance, a cocoa sustainability project may need Twi materials for farmer groups. We provide technical translation for these documents.

    Governance, elections and civic education

Civic and voter education must reach people in their own languages. So a governance project may need the same message in English, Twi, Ewe, Ga and Dagbani. We keep the tone neutral and the facts consistent across every version.

    Business, trade and tourism

Accra hosts the secretariat of the African Continental Free Trade Area. Moreover, trade, banking and tourism keep growing. Companies therefore need contracts, apps, adverts and websites in English and local languages. We offer marketing translation for these needs.

    Research and the diaspora

Universities and survey firms use our Ghana translation services for questionnaires and transcripts. Furthermore, large Ghanaian communities live in the UK, the US and across Europe. As a result, families and lawyers need civil records, statements and interviews translated.

    Documents We Translate

Our Ghana translation services cover most document types. Common examples include:

    • Birth, marriage and death certificates
    • Diplomas, transcripts and school records
    • Contracts, tenders and company documents
    • Court papers, affidavits and witness statements
    • Health leaflets, consent forms and posters
    • Survey tools, interview guides and transcripts
    • Radio scripts and community messages
    • Websites, apps and marketing copy

If an embassy, court or university needs an official version, we can provide certified translation services on request. We also offer legal translation for contracts and court work.

Twi, Ewe, Ga and Dagbani: Translation Challenges

Good Ghana translation services need local knowledge as well as language skills. Here are some points our linguists watch closely.

    English to Twi translation

Akan has several written forms, mainly Asante Twi, Akuapem Twi and Fante. Each form has its own spelling and some of its own words. For example, a Fante reader in Cape Coast may prefer different wording from a reader in Kumasi. Therefore, we ask where your readers live before we assign a linguist.

    Special letters and tone

Many Ghanaian languages are tonal. In addition, Twi, Ewe, Ga and Dagbani use special letters such as ɛ and ɔ. These letters must display correctly in print, apps and subtitles. So we check fonts and layout as part of quality control.

    Proverbs and respectful language

Proverbs and polite forms carry great weight in Ghanaian speech. In fact, a well-chosen proverb can make a message more persuasive. Our linguists use them with care, especially for elders, chiefs and religious audiences.

    Code-switching in cities

In Accra and Kumasi, many people mix English with Twi or Ga in daily speech. Ghanaian Pidgin is also common among young people. For this reason, we match the style to your audience, from formal text to relaxed radio scripts.

Planning Ghana Translation Services by Region

Ghana’s language map changes from region to region. So a short plan helps you reach the right people. Here is a simple starting guide.

    • Greater Accra: English, Twi and Ga, with Ewe and Pidgin also common.
    • Ashanti, Bono and Eastern: Asante or Akuapem Twi reach most people.
    • Central and Western: Fante, plus Nzema in the far west.
    • Volta and Oti: Ewe, plus several smaller local languages.
    • Northern, Savannah and North East: Dagbani and Gonja, with Hausa in towns.
    • Upper East and Upper West: Dagaare, Kasem and other local languages.

Our Ghana translation services team can then confirm the best mix for each district and audience. In addition, cross-border projects often add French for Togo, Burkina Faso or Côte d’Ivoire. See our French translation in Africa page for that work. For more language data, the Languages of Ghana article is a helpful overview.

    Interpretation for Work in Ghana

Alongside written work, our Ghana translation services include interpretation. We arrange English, Twi, Ewe, Ga and Dagbani interpreters for:

    • Conferences, workshops and board meetings
    • Community meetings and consultations
    • Research interviews and focus groups
    • Business meetings and negotiations
    • Legal and medical appointments

For example, we offer remote interpretation over Zoom, Teams and phone. For in-person events, we also source interpreters through our partner network. Visit our interpretation services page to learn more.

    Our Translation Process

Every project in our Ghana translation services follows the same clear steps.

    1. Quote: First, you send your files, languages and deadline. We then send a clear quote.
    2. Assign a linguist: Next, we select a native speaker with the right subject knowledge.
    3. Translate: The linguist then translates the text and builds a glossary.
    4. Edit and proofread: After that, a second linguist checks meaning, style and grammar.
    5. Quality check: Our project manager also reviews names, numbers and layout.
    6. Delivery: Finally, we send the finished file and answer your questions.

For health and research materials, we can add back-translation or field testing. We also offer proofreading and editing for texts you already have.

    Quality and Confidentiality

First of all, we protect every document you share. Our linguists sign confidentiality agreements, and only the project team sees your files. We can also sign your own non-disclosure agreement.

Machine tools can handle simple English, but they still miss tone and context. Moreover, they offer weak support for Ewe, Ga, Dagbani or Dagaare. Therefore, trained human linguists translate and review every word we deliver.

Why Choose Ugaafrik Editors for Ghana Translation Services?

    • African language focus: We work with African and world languages every day.
    • Native speakers: Each linguist translates into their first language.
    • Two-linguist review: A second linguist checks every project.
    • Many languages, one project: We can deliver English, Twi, Ewe, Ga and Dagbani together.
    • One contact: A single project manager guides you from start to finish.
