Ugaafrik Editors offers professional Malawi translation services for organisations that work in or with Malawi. From our base in Kampala, we translate and interpret Chichewa, Tumbuka, Yao, Lomwe, Sena, Tonga and English. Through a remote network of native-speaker linguists, we serve NGOs, health programmes, researchers, businesses and families wherever they are.
In addition, our linguists know Malawian culture and everyday speech, not just the dictionary. So if you already know what you need, you can request a quote today.

Malawi’s Languages and Why Malawi Translation Services Matter
Malawi has a population of around 20 million people. English is the official language of government, law and higher education. Meanwhile, Chichewa is the national language and the most widely spoken language in the country.
However, Chichewa is not everyone’s first language. For example, many people in the north speak Tumbuka at home, while many people around Mangochi speak Yao. Similarly, Lomwe is strong in Mulanje and Thyolo, and Sena is common in the Lower Shire.
So good Malawi translation services start with the right language choice. The Ethnologue page for Malawi lists the country’s languages and where people speak them.
Malawi’s main languages at a glance
| Language | Main areas | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Chichewa (Chinyanja) | Central and Southern regions, nationwide | Bantu; national language and main lingua franca |
| Tumbuka | Northern Region, Mzuzu | Bantu; main language of the north |
| Yao (Chiyao) | Mangochi, Machinga, Zomba | Bantu; also spoken in Mozambique and Tanzania |
| Lomwe | Mulanje, Thyolo, Phalombe | Bantu; related to Makhuwa in Mozambique |
| Sena | Chikwawa, Nsanje | Bantu; shared with Mozambique |
| Tonga | Nkhata Bay | Bantu; lakeshore community |
| English | Nationwide | Official language |

English to Chichewa Translation
Our most common Malawi request is English to Chichewa translation. Chichewa is a tonal Bantu language with a rich system of noun classes. In writing, however, it does not mark tone, so context carries a lot of meaning.
We aim for clear, natural Chichewa that rural readers can follow. Therefore, we avoid heavy formal words and needless English borrowing. For example, a farm advice leaflet should sound like a trusted extension worker, not a legal notice.
Chichewa is also close to Nyanja in Zambia and Mozambique. As a result, one translation can sometimes serve more than one country. Still, we review local words before reuse, because spelling and vocabulary differ a little.
We also translate from Chichewa into English. For example, we handle interview recordings, community feedback, letters and witness statements. As a result, your analysts, lawyers and donors can work with the material directly and quote it with confidence.
Tumbuka, Yao and Other Malawian Languages
Many programmes target a single district or region. In those cases, a local language often works better than Chichewa. For instance, a northern health campaign may reach more people in Tumbuka, especially older listeners.
Similarly, Yao matters in many lakeshore and southern districts. Yao speakers often follow Islamic traditions, so religious and cultural terms need care. We also support Lomwe, Sena and Tonga for radio spots, posters and community meetings.
Who Uses Malawi Translation Services?
Malawi attracts many development and research projects. As a result, our clients come from several sectors.

Health programmes
Health partners run large programmes on HIV, malaria, maternal health and nutrition. So we translate consent forms, patient leaflets, training guides and survey tools. Our medical translation team keeps clinical terms accurate and patient messages simple.
Agriculture and climate
Most Malawians depend on farming, especially maize, tobacco, tea and groundnuts. Therefore, farm advice, climate resilience guides and cooperative records often need Chichewa or Tumbuka versions. We also translate radio scripts and SMS messages for farmers.
NGOs, UN agencies and refugee response
Malawi hosts refugees at Dzaleka camp, many of them from the DRC, Burundi and Rwanda. So case workers may need French, Swahili, Kirundi or Kinyarwanda alongside Chichewa. Because we also cover the DRC and Burundi, one supplier can handle the whole caseload.
Researchers and survey firms
Universities and survey firms use our Malawi translation services for questionnaires, interview guides and back-translation. After fieldwork, we transcribe and translate audio into English for analysis.
Education and governance
Schools, civic groups and local councils also need clear materials. For example, they ask for voter education guides, school readers, policy summaries and public notices in Chichewa or Tumbuka. In addition, we translate court and police papers for legal cases.
Businesses and individuals
Banks, telecoms, mining firms and exporters need contracts, product labels and customer messages. In addition, individuals ask us to translate certificates and records. We can provide certified translations on request.
Documents We Handle
Our team translates a wide range of material, such as:
- Consent forms, patient leaflets and community health guides
- Questionnaires, interview guides and transcripts
- Farm advice sheets, radio scripts and SMS campaigns
- Project proposals, donor reports and monitoring tools
- Contracts, policies and company records
- Websites, apps, posters and social posts
- Birth certificates, school records and ID papers
- Voter guides, school readers and public notices
Common Challenges in Malawian Translation
- Language choice: Chichewa reaches most people. However, local languages build trust in some districts.
- Literacy levels: Many readers prefer short, simple sentences. So we keep wording plain and suggest pictures where they help.
- Health terms: Some medical words have no direct equivalent. Therefore, we explain them in everyday language and test them with native speakers.
- Cultural fit: Proverbs, greetings and examples should feel local. Otherwise, readers may ignore the message.
Interpretation for Malawi
Many projects need spoken support as well as written work. For instance, we arrange remote Chichewa and Tumbuka interpreters for staff interviews, donor calls, research interviews and online trainings. We also support case interviews with refugees in French, Swahili and Kirundi.
Before each session, we share your glossary and briefing notes with the interpreter. That way, the interpreter knows the topic, the speakers and the key terms. As a result, meetings run smoothly and nobody loses the thread.
Malawi Translation Services for Regional Programmes
Malawi belongs to SADC and COMESA, and Uganda is also a COMESA member. So many trade, health and farming programmes run across several countries at once. For example, one regional toolkit may need English, Chichewa, Portuguese, Swahili and Luganda versions.
Our Malawi translation services fit this kind of work well. First, we build one shared glossary. Next, we assign a native speaker for each language. Finally, we check that every version carries the same message. The Languages of Malawi overview can also help you plan which languages to include.
