Ugaafrik Editors offers professional Luo translation services for organisations and individuals across Uganda, Kenya, South Sudan and the wider region. “Luo” covers a family of closely related languages. So we first find out exactly which Luo language your audience speaks. Then we assign a native linguist from that community.

We translate documents, interpret meetings, transcribe recordings and add subtitles to video. For example, you may need Dholuo for Kisumu, Acholi for Gulu, Alur for Nebbi or Dhopadhola for Tororo. In each case, our Luo translation services deliver clear and natural results.

    What Is the Luo Language?

Luo, also spelled Lwo, is not a single language. Instead, it names a group of about a dozen Western Nilotic languages. The Luo peoples live in South Sudan, Ethiopia, northern Uganda and north-eastern DR Congo. They also live in western Kenya and northern Tanzania. You can learn more in the Luo languages article on Wikipedia.

Of course, Luo languages are Nilotic, not Bantu. As a result, their grammar and sounds differ a lot from Luganda or Swahili. They share many features with each other, however, such as tone and similar core vocabulary.

    Northern and Southern Luo

In general, linguists divide the family into two main branches. Northern Luo includes languages such as Shilluk and Anuak, spoken in South Sudan and Ethiopia. Southern Luo, meanwhile, includes most of the Luo languages of Uganda and Kenya. Southern Luo languages are very close to each other, so speakers can often follow each other’s speech.

    Luo Languages We Translate

    • Dholuo (Kenya and Tanzania). The language of the Luo of Kisumu, Siaya, Homa Bay and Migori in Kenya. It also reaches the Mara Region of Tanzania. Kenya’s 2009 census counted about 4.2 million speakers.
    • Acholi (Uganda and South Sudan). Spoken in Gulu, Kitgum, Pader and nearby districts, and in Magwi County, South Sudan. See our Acholi translation services.
    • Lango (Uganda). Spoken in Lira, Apac, Oyam and the rest of the Lango sub-region. See our Lango translation services.
    • Alur (Uganda and DR Congo). Spoken in Nebbi, Zombo and Pakwach in West Nile, and across the border in Ituri, DR Congo.
    • Dhopadhola, or Adhola (Uganda). The language of the Jopadhola people around Tororo in eastern Uganda.
    • Kumam (Uganda). Spoken in Kaberamaido and Kalaki. See our Kumam translation services.

How Similar Are the Luo Languages?

The Southern Luo languages share a lot of vocabulary. For example, studies estimate that Dholuo shares about 93% of its basic vocabulary with Adhola, 90% with Alur and 83% with Acholi. That is why a Kenyan Luo speaker and a Ugandan Jopadhola speaker can often chat with ease.

However, high similarity does not mean one translation fits all. Spelling, everyday words, loanwords and idioms also differ from place to place. In addition, each community has its own identity and expects text in its own language. A Dholuo leaflet in Gulu would feel foreign, just as an Acholi poster would in Kisumu. So our Luo translation services always match the language to the audience.

    Translation Challenges in Luo Languages

    • Tone. All Luo languages use tone, yet everyday writing rarely marks it. Therefore, wording must make meaning clear from context.
    • Vowel quality. Many Luo languages have vowel sounds that standard spelling does not fully capture.
    • Different spelling rules. Each language has its own conventions, so we never copy one language’s spelling into another.
    • Loanwords. Kenyan Dholuo borrows from Swahili and English, while Alur in Congo may borrow from French or Lingala.
    • New terms. Medical, legal and digital words often need clear descriptions instead of direct swaps.

    Who Needs Luo Translation Services?

Demand for Luo translation services comes from both sides of the Uganda–Kenya border and beyond. Our clients include:

    • Health partners running campaigns on HIV, malaria, immunisation and mother and child health. See our medical translation services.
    • NGOs and UN agencies working on farming, fisheries, water, education and refugee response.
    • Researchers running surveys and interviews around Lake Victoria and in northern Uganda.
    • Government bodies sharing notices on elections, land and public services.
    • Courts and lawyers who need statements, contracts and asylum documents translated. See our legal translation services.
    • Businesses such as banks, telecoms and consumer brands targeting Luo-speaking customers.
    • Media, music and film producers who need scripts, subtitles and voice-over.
    • Churches and families who need religious texts, letters and certificates.

    English to Luo Translation

Most of our projects run from English into a Luo language. A good English to Luo translation keeps the exact meaning, but it also sounds natural. To achieve this, our translators rebuild sentences, swap English idioms for local ones and pick words people really use.

For larger projects, we build a glossary at the start. Then key terms stay the same across leaflets, posters, radio scripts and forms. When a project covers several Luo languages, we keep the glossaries aligned. As a result, every community hears the same message in its own words.

    Luo to English translation

We also translate from Luo languages into English. For example, researchers send us transcripts, while lawyers send statements and evidence. In this direction, we keep the speaker’s voice and explain cultural terms in short notes.

    Documents we translate

    • Health messages, posters and patient leaflets
    • Consent forms, questionnaires and interview guides
    • Training manuals and school materials
    • Contracts, affidavits and court papers
    • Reports, policies and public notices
    • Websites, adverts and product labels
    • Religious texts and church materials
    • Certificates, letters and personal records

    Luo Interpretation, Transcription and Subtitling

Similarly, our Luo interpreters support meetings, trainings, clinics, court hearings and field research. Depending on the setting, we offer consecutive, simultaneous, whispered or remote interpreting. Learn more about our interpretation services.

In addition, we turn Luo audio and video into text. For instance, our transcription services cover interviews, focus groups and radio shows. Meanwhile, our subtitling services add Luo or English subtitles to films, music videos and training content.

Choosing the Right Luo Translation Services for Your Audience

Before you order, think about where your readers live. For example, a fisheries project on the Kenyan shore of Lake Victoria needs Dholuo. In contrast, a school project in Nebbi needs Alur. If you are unsure, just tell us the district or county, and we will advise.

Next, think about format. Many rural listeners prefer radio and audio. So we can turn your text into a script that sounds natural when spoken. In addition, we can record voice-overs with native speakers.

Finally, think about cross-border reach. Some campaigns run in both Uganda and Kenya at the same time. In that case, our Luo translation services prepare a separate version for each country, while one shared glossary keeps the core message the same.

How Our Luo Translation Services Work

    1. Quote. Send your files and tell us the audience, location and deadline. Then we confirm the right Luo language and send a quote.
    2. Linguist match. We assign a native speaker of that exact language, with knowledge of your subject.
    3. Translation. The translator drafts the text and builds a term list.
    4. Second review. Another native linguist checks accuracy, style and spelling through our proofreading and editing step.
    5. Quality checks. We check names, numbers, dates and layout. For key texts, we can also arrange back-translation.
    6. Delivery. You receive the final files in your format, and we stay on hand for questions.

    Quality and Confidentiality

First of all, native speakers translate and check every Luo file we deliver. Machine tools support most Luo languages poorly, and they often mix them up. So they are not safe for health, legal or research use.

Just as importantly, we protect your data, because many files hold private details. As a rule, only your project team sees your files, and we will sign a non-disclosure agreement on request. For research projects, we follow the data rules in your protocol.
